Waste

Can time be wasted? I just spent about an hour reading blog posts from one of my favorite singers. I did not just spend about an hour doing my homework. I learned enough about this man to come to really respect him as a person (and also wonder about his sanity, but hey, I'm pretty insane, too). So my question is... was that time wasted?

I did not complete the task i needed to do, the task that would make my life easier in the long run. I'll now have to do all this homework later and probably do it with a lesser quality.

I probably could have spent this time more productively. But is it wasted?

What is waste? Waste is something used, unwanted, leftover, all the good taken out of it. Think an empty potato chip bag, or a banana peel. All the goodness is gone.

Was this time wasted? Is all the good i could have accomplished in this hour now gone forever?

I'm not sure that time is something that we have the power to "use" or to "waste". Time is a reality, but the way that we perceive it is cultural. Our culture tells us that time not spent working toward a goal that will give you monetary or social success is wasted.

Today, I also spent time with a new friend that I am recently getting to know better. I didn't accomplish much homework, but I was able to talk with her and build our friendship.

Was that time wasted?

I wish I could say that this was a well-written blog post, poignant argument or pointed witticism such as the ones i have recently spent so much time reading.

Did you just waste your time reading this?

Gifts a College Student would appreciate besides cash (althought that's good too)

these are in no specific order.

1. quarters
these are depleted disappointingly quickly. they also cost money, a thing foreign to most college students

2. mail
there is nothing like opening up your mailbox and seeing nothing. (sigh). there is nothing like opening your mailbox for the 2nd time and seeing A PACKAGE SLIP!!! that is actually for your mailbox partner. (grrr)There's nothing like opening your mailbox the 3rd time in one week and seeing a letter. and its actually for YOU!! (hooray!)

3. snack food
yummmmmmmmmy crunchy companions on the lonely road of homework

4. sleep
its probably not possible, but if you find a way, let me know

5. a hug
can't get enough!

6. tickets to somewhere. preferably off-campus
"wait! look at that! its... its civilization! its real!!"

7. other things specific to their situation
if someone you know is taking a rodeo class, a horse might be an appropriate gift
